Finally, after many weeks, I have edited and uploaded the videos from my exhibit last November. I decided to make one full length video and three shorter videos. Because of the exhibit layout, I had to film each display area separately. The full length video features all five display walls with transitions between each area. In the shorter videos, the display walls are grouped in smaller sections.
It was exciting to see the drawings and prints framed and hung on the walls at the Hosmer Gallery. This exhibit was in a shared space with me and two other artists. My co-exhibitors were both photographers.
This exhibit gave me the opportunity to learn how the work would be received by visitors to the gallery. At the opening reception, people shared stories about grandmothers or great-grandmothers who worked in the textile mills. I learned more about families and their experiences working in a factory. I also learned which drawings captured people’s attention.
That latter part is important. Now that this work has been exhibited in a shared space, my intention is to expand the number of pieces in the show in preparation for a solo exhibition. The exhibit at the Hosmer Gallery had 19 pieces (drawings and prints). A solo exhibit, depending on the size of the space, may require 25-30 pieces. Or more.
Now that the exhibit is over I’m experimenting in the studio. Playing with some different media and trying out ideas that may, eventually, lead to finished pieces for a solo exhibit. Stay tuned!
Below is the full length video of my exhibit, We Will Be Sisters: Stories of Female Textile Mill Workers.
